ARTIST STATEMENT

I work intuitively, allowing each painting to develop through a process of building, disrupting and responding to what emerges. Working primarily in acrylic and mixed media, I layer paint, scrape, draw and erase, allowing the work to evolve as I go.

The painting guides the process as it develops. I respond to colour, texture and gesture, making decisions along the way while remaining open to unexpected shifts.

I’m willing to take risks in the studio, even when that means disrupting something that is working. I have completely reworked entire paintings in the process of finding what comes next. Letting go is part of the process. Sometimes I have to let go of what I’ve already created to see where the painting wants to go next.

Memory, emotion and a sense of place often find their way into my work, sometimes consciously and sometimes unconsciously. I am interested in what emerges when I let go of control and allow the painting to take me somewhere unexpected.

I leave my paintings open to interpretation. I don’t want to tell the viewer what to see or feel. I want the work to create a moment of pause and allow each person to find their own connection to it.
