BARBARA GEORGACOPOULOS | Contemporary Abstract Artist
Barbara Georgacopoulos is a self-taught contemporary abstract artist based in Toronto, creating intuitive, layered paintings that explore movement, memory and emotion through gesture, texture and evolving form.
After earning an Honours BA in Political Science from the University of Toronto, Barbara spent 20 years working in the broadcasting industry at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). Throughout those years, her passion for art remained a constant thread. Over time, that passion became her focus, leading her to pursue painting as a second career.
Process & Practice
Barbara’s paintings are an exploration of colour, texture and form. She works intuitively, allowing each painting to develop organically as layers and marks accumulate and evolve. Her work reflects a curiosity about what can emerge through the process of painting, with each piece becoming its own visual conversation.
Artistic Development
Her artistic development includes independent studio practice, studio sessions and workshops with established local artists, alongside an ongoing commitment to experimentation and material exploration.
Her work has been presented at a Toronto artist expo, alongside participation in selected holiday marketplaces and shopping events.
In 2020, Barbara was selected through a Call for Artists as one of two artists invited to present a solo exhibition at Steam Whistle Gallery/Roundhouse in Toronto. The exhibition was ultimately cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The experience marked an important moment in Barbara’s artistic development. After stepping away from her practice for a period, she has returned to painting with renewed focus and commitment.
